How does the Nissan X-Trail's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system work?

I'm considering buying a Nissan X-Trail, but I'm not sure if the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system is worth the extra cost. Can anyone explain how it works and if it's worth it?

I personally don't think the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive is necessary unless you frequently drive off-road. Save your money and opt for the standard front-wheel drive.
