What should I do if my Nissan Patrol is overheating?

I noticed that my Nissan Patrol's temperature gauge is rising quickly and the engine is making strange noises. What should I do to prevent any damage?

Firstly, pull over and let the engine cool down. Be careful not to open the radiator cap while the engine is still hot. Once it has cooled down, check the coolant levels and make sure there are no leaks.
